Product Review: Citronella Bug Spray

When my mother-in-law told me that there was news that the dengue-carrying mosquitoes not only bites during the day, but also at night, I got alarmed. Those darn mosquitoes! Who would've thought they'd install night vision?!

Anyhoo, the first thing that went to my mind was, I needed to put something on baby's skin so she won't attract insects, mosquitoes in particular. Since it will be applied directly on baby's skin, it has to be safe and deet-free. Deet, which is the active ingredient in most insect-repellents, has a harmful side effect, so that's a big no-no for me (the most popular and commercially available insect repellent in our market has been found to have deet). And so, the second thing that came into mind was: citronella. I've heard about its effectiveness in repelling mosquitoes from my mom friends, so I decided to give it a try. We also asked her pedia if we can use it, and we got her go signal. We tried HHN's Citronella Bug Spray (which is actually oil-based) and since she's less than a year old, we only applied a few drops on her thigh, arms & clothes, and waited if she'll have allergic reactions. Thankfully she didn't. It has a strong citrus-y scent (which is natural for citronella), but baby and I didn't mind, as it is that same scent that repels mosquitoes. I've also asked baby's yaya to dab some on our bed linens and curtains, just to make the room mosquito free, instead of spraying commercially bought bug-spray. So far, no bug bites for baby and me ;)

Note: I've read somewhere (sorry, can't remember) that you can combine HHN's citronella bug spray (which is again, oil-based -- they have to do something about that label) with water, then spray it in your room like a regular bug-spray. Though I'm not sure if that will work since oil & water doesn't mix. I have yet to try and update this blog.

Product Review: Hydrating Facial Wash

(Mobile phone is not for sale. It was just used as a sizing comparison)

When I got pregnant, I read about how some chemicals in commercially available facial wash is harmful for the baby. So I stopped using the product I usually buy. Add oil & dirt from my daily commute to the office plus hormones, I had breakouts. I tried a 'milder' product but that didn't help, and I had breakouts until after I gave birth. Post-pregnancy, I then tried again my usual facial wash (since baby is out anyways), but my skin just didn't respond well, and then, more breakouts. That is until I tried Human Heart Nature's (or HHN, for short) facial wash. I only bought the 50ml bottle because I wanted to give it a try. For the first 2 days, my face was itchy, though it's not something that I can't tolerate and alarmed about. On the 3rd day, ah! Results! No more itchiness and my face doesn't feel dry at all. I used up the rest of the bottle, and I didn't have any breakouts anymore. The itchiness also went away completely. I was actually thinking that the 'itchy' feeling was probably 'chemical withdrawal' from the commercial facial wash that I used.

So if you're thinking of changing facial wash & wants to go organic, try this. And oh! Did you know that Moringa, one of the main ingredients of this facial wash, is actually our local malunggay? :)

As with most organic products, HHN's hydrating facial wash doesn't have a strong scent, is not 'foamy', and is not good at removing make-up.

* Disclaimer: As I did my research, not everyone's skin is OK with organic products. So as with all products that you want to try, buy the smallest bottle first, so if in case it didn't work out for you the way it did for me, you wouldn't cry for shelling a big amount on something that didn't give you the result/s you want. Also, you may report the negative result you got from HHN's Customer Service at this site. Their CSRs will be more than willing to get back to you as soon as they can. (and they're really helpful, I promise).

Overview: Human Heart Nature

If you're probably asking "why" I got into dealership with Human Heart Nature (since it's just a growing business, started 2008), it's because I believe in their core values: Pro-Philippines, Pro-Poor, Pro-Environment.

Pro-Philippines.
Most of the ingredients they use in their products is grown here in the country, and their employees are locals, giving Pinoys regular jobs, which then helps our economy.

Pro-Poor.
They employ Gawad Kalinga residents, thus, empowering them through stable livelihood. It's my personal belief that if you really want to help the poor, you don't give them money to get them through the day. You give them jobs so they can sustain themselves all throughout their lives.

Pro-Environment.
Since their products don't contain harmful chemicals, rest assured that whatever you wash down the sink or toilet, it doesn't pollute our waters. They also use recycled bottles (use of Polyethylene terephthalate, or PET) to package their products to minimize waste. If you have one bought their products and consumed it all, and don't know what to do with the empty bottles, you can bring them to one of their offices to return. All returned bottles will be sold and the proceeds will go to the nearby Gawad Kalinga community (another Pro-Poor movement). Or to those who bought from me, you can just return them to me and I'll be the one to bring it to their office ;)

Intro: New Blogging Mommy (for real)

Hello dear reader/s! (if I do have one)

I've thought a lot whether I should start a 'real' blog or not. I like to write, but not as much as I love reading. But then I realized, there are sometimes a lot of things I want to share on Facebook that not everyone on my friends' list would like to read. I guess some of them are just polite enough not to block me on their news feeds :D And so I'm starting a blog.

Anyhoo, this is, well, an online journal of things I want to share to the online world, something that I can show to my kids in the future, and something to look back and read on when my memory fails me (hopefully I can still read by then, or my kids can read them to me. Whatever.)

I am not a very good writer (so please bear with me). But I do hope that whatever I share on this blog will be able to help and inspire you in any way it can.

DIY Tin Cans with Bears

Made by by mom, the real DIY queen :) If it weren't for her, the girls would have a boring tin can with bears in them.

She also changed the bears' ribbons to match our motiff. Their original ribbon was green, and we just tied the same ribbon we used in the tin cans on them.

Aren't they cuties? :) My mom wants one for herself. Aagawan niya daw ang isang maswerteng bata ng timba.

Peso power

Tin cans: 70php each found at Tabora St. Divilandia (aluminum)

Bears: 100php each, bought last year at Greenhills

Ribbons: more or less 50php for all 3 tin cans
